Jugendstil German Porcelain Figurine of a Brass Playing Frog by Goebel Company

About the Item

Belle Époque german glazed porcelain figurine of a brass playing frog by Goebel Company By: Goebel Company Material: porcelain, paint, ceramic Technique: glazed, hand-painted, painted, molded, pressed Dimensions: 4.5 in x 3 in x 5 in Date: early 20th century Style: Jugendstil, Art Nouveau, Belle Époque Place of origin: Germany This is a small sculpture made of german hand-painted and glazed porcelain depicting an anthropomorphic frog seated wearing classicist costume and wig characteristic of the period. The figure holds a brass instrument (probably a cornet or a trumpet), as if playing a tune. Underneath the base can be seen the stamp of the Goebel Company prior to 1923. German porcelain manufacturers like Goebel were known for their high quality porcelain with delicate modeling and hand-painting. The Jugendstil and Art Nouveau styles were popular in Germany in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Figurines like this frog musician were mass-produced as decorative objects for the growing middle class market. The elegance and whimsy of this figurine are characteristic of the fine porcelain craftsmanship of Germany during the Belle Époque era and beyond.
