About the Item

Bust of the Princess of Lamballe Marie Antoinette's Closest Confidante Carved from statuary marble and resting on a waisted rectangular Carrara socle, the portrait bust of Princess Marie-Louise Thérèse of Savoy-Carignan, later known as Princesse de Lamballe, executed with great finesse, her coiffed hair with a rose crown and elaborate wig. French, circa 1860 The subject of this bust, Princess Marie-Louise Thérèse of Savoy-Carignan, later known as Princesse de Lamballe, was born in Turin on September 8, 1749. In 1767 she married the very wealthy Louis Alexandre de Bourbon, Prince de Lamballe, who was related to the royal family. Her husband died soon afterwards. The young widow became a confidante of Marie-Antoinette and, soon after the latter became queen, the Princesse became Superintendent of the Queen's Household; the highest ranking lady-in-waiting. In 1792, during the French Revolution, she was killed and decapitated.
