About the Item

A fine pair of Cabinet sized busts. In parian or bisque porcelain. Depicting Friedrich Schiller and Johann Wolfgang Goethe, two of the most revered figures in German literature. The Schiller bust is modeled after the Johann Heinrich Dannecker's famous Neoclassical bust. The Goethe bust is after a Christian Daniel Rauch model. Simply wonderful busts of the great literary luminaries! Date: Mid-Late 19th Century Overall Condition: They are in overall fair, as-pictured, used estate condition. Condition Details: Schiller: There are casting flaws noted in the hair, shoulder, and to the foot, one flaw on the interior seems to be opening to a small crack on the interior. Punctuated with black marks from the firing throughout. Goethe: There are casting flaws noted in the hair, shoulder, and to the foot. Punctuated with black marks from the firing throughout, and there are numerous brown spots on the shoulder fired into the surface from the kiln. Otherwise, both have some fine & light surface scratches and other signs of expected light wear consistent with age. Marks: Unmarked Measurements: Schiller: Height: ca. 6 5/8 in. Width: ca. 4 1/8 in.
