Antique Derby Porcelain Figurine of William Shakespeare Model No. 305

About the Item

A fine antique English porcelain figurine. By Derby. In the form of William Shakespeare. Depicting a Shakespeare that leans onto a book-covered plinth with his hand supporting his chin. His other hand points to a scroll that dangles from the plinth which features a gilt excerpt from his play, "The Tempest". The excerpt in question is from "The Tempest" Act 4, scene 1, 148-158: Prospero: "Our revels now are ended. These our actors, As I foretold you, were all spirits, and Are melted into air, into thin air: And like the baseless fabric of this vision, The cloud-capp'd tow'rs, the gorgeous palaces, The solemn temples, the great globe itself, Yea, all which it inherit, shall dissolve, And, like this insubstantial pageant faded, Leave not a rack behind. We are such stuff As dreams are made on; and our little life Is rounded with a sleep." Simply a wonderful depiction of one of history's most famous playwrights! Date: circa 1820s - 1830s Overall Condition: It is in overall good, as-pictured, used estate condition with no chips, cracks, or repairs. There is also some noticeable staining throughout. The staining is most pronounced to Shakespeare's left foot/hand and the face on the front of the plinth. The base of the plinth has numerous small black firing flaws around its circumference. Otherwise, there is some rubbing to the gold, some fine & light surface scratches and other signs of expected light wear consistent with age.
