Antique Statuary Marble Bust of Diana

About the Item

An antique white statuary marble bust of Diana, ex Dunkirk Manor, Stroud, England. Dating to circa 1850, this Italian sculpture is of an impressive life size scale mounted on a circular base. At over 150 years old, it has truly stood the test of time with characterful weathering. A perfect piece for an interior or exterior display in any period property looking to elegance, style, and appreciation for Greek mythology. This bust is a depiction of Diana, Roman goddess of wild animals and the hunt, known in Greek mythology as Artemis. Although, in Roman mythology, she was originally an indigenous woodland goddess, Diana identified with her Greek counterpart, who has ties to the moon and daylight. The most famous place of worship for the goddess was the grove of Diana Nemorensis, meaning 'Diana of the Wood', located near Rome. A well known over life-size sculpture of the Roman goddess named 'The Diana of Versailles or Artemis, Goddess of the Hunt', is currently located in the Musée du Louvre, Paris. It depicts her in the middle of a hunt holding a deer. This white statuary marble bust is a different depiction of this impressive goddess, allowing for a closer look at her more finer details, perhaps ignored in her more well known statue.

Tenerani Statuary Marble Bust of a Young Augustus Caesar
Located in Wormelow, Herefordshire
A finely carved statuary white marble bust of a young Augustus Caesar attributed to the workshops of 19th century Italian sculptor Pietro Tenerani (1789-1869). Also known as Young Octavian, this bust of a young Roman Emperor Augustus Caesar is after a sculpture found in the Pio Clementino Museums of the Vatican. Carved with exceptional detail, the bust is elevated on a turned socle and bears the name ‘TENERANI’ to the front. Other busts like this one after the Vatican original of the former Emperor Augustus were sculpted in the Mid-18th Century. Pietro Tenerani (1789-1869) was a notable Italian sculptor of the early 19th century. In his early career, he trained under Italian sculptor Lorenzo Bartolini, before moving to Rome where he won a scholarship as a pupil of Danish sculptor, Bertel Thorvalsden. Having honed his skills, Tenerani worked from a studio of his own in later years. William Cavendish, 6th Duke of Devonshire, Queen Victoria and Pope Pius IX...

John de Vaere Statuary Marble Busts
Located in London, GB
A fine pair of George III statuary marble busts of a boy and a girl by John de Vaere (1755 – 1830), 1798. Signed J DE-VAERE Sculpr. 1798. Considering what a sensitive and accomplished sculptor he was, surprisingly little is known about John de Vaere. Born in France in 1755, he settled in England some time before 1786 when he enrolled as a student at the Royal Academy Schools. In 1787 he left to study in Rome, with the financial assistance of Josiah Wedgwood. In Rome he won a Silver Medal for Sculpture from the Pope and became an assistant to John Flaxman. On his return to England in 1790, he worked as a modeler for Wedgwood until the latter’s death in 1795, after which he worked with Eleanor Coade, probably replacing John Bacon...
