Claude Munier, Busto di gentiluomo, 1780

Il busto in terracotta, posto sopra un peduccio in marmo colorato, rappresenta un personaggio maschile con i capelli trattenuti a coda da un nastro ed è abbigliato con una marsina senza collo chiusa con alamari con nappine applicate e ricami lungo i bordi, una sottomarsina con analoghi ricami al collo e una cravatta in merletto. Lo scultore si firma nel retro del busto, indicando il nome completo, e proclamandosi “contois” ossia originario della Bourgogne Franche-Comté, regione posta nel 25° Dipartimento del Doubs sito nell’est della Francia e specifica inoltre il paese nativo “Naisons”. Nel retro l’autore scrive erroneamente sia “contois” sia “Naisons” al posto di “comtois” e “Maisons”. Attraverso questa informazione si può rintracciare il luogo indicato con Maisons-du-Bois-Lièvremont, un piccolo villaggio della Bourgogne Franche-Comté. Considerando la poca importanza nel XVIII secolo del piccolo villaggio in cui nacque, tale scritta va interpretata come celebrativa delle sue origini, in quanto dovette sicuramente operare in un centro più prestigioso. Le informazioni storico-artistiche riguardo Claude Munier sono altrettanto misteriose. In un articolo pubblicato su “L’Intermédiaire des chercheurs et curieux” nel 1908, Charles Oulmont (Mulhouse 1883 – Pontoise 1984), scrittore e famoso collezionista d’arte francese del XVIII secolo le cui opere confluirono tramite donazione in diversi istituzioni museali francesi come il Musée des Beaux-Arts di Strasburgo, Mulhouse e Besançon, chiede notizie di questo scultore di cui conosce due busti in terracotta: il primo un “superbe buste de Voltaire” firmato nel retro “Munier fecit”, e il secondo il ritratto di un commediante, firmato e datato sulla base “Claude Munier 1780” (Charles Oulmont, L’Intermédiaire des chercheurs et curieux, 30 marzo 1908, Paris, pp. 445-446.) Grazie a queste informazioni siamo in grado di ricostruire un primo corpus di questo artista, seppur queste due opere siano ancora ignote e quindi il ritratto in terracotta qui presentato risulta ad oggi l’unica opera nota di Munier. Considerando gli importanti studi degli ultimi decenni sulla scultura francese del Settecento, la mancata conoscenza di questa figura può essere dovuta sia alla sua provenienza da un piccolo villaggio dell’est della Francia, sia prendendo in considerazione eventi avversi che possono aver compromesso la sua vita, portandolo ad una morte prematura. A supporto di questa possibilità si può far notare come anche il busto di commediante, rintracciato da Oulmont, portasse la medesima data – 1780 – del nostro, a dimostrazione ulteriore di come la sua attività dovette forse svolgersi in pochi anni.
