About the Item

Museum quality and condition pair of busts. Anyone who knows a little bit about indigenous art immediately can tell that these sculptures were not carved by a local artist. These are clearly in the realistic style of a European craftsman. Belgian sculptor Jef Deconinck on one of his travels must have been inspired by the country and the people of Papua New Guinea and this pair of small busts shows the incredible level of his skill at that time. The proportions, the details and the facial features of this couple are of the highest quality. And for those who did not know, 'Papua' is a word in the Malaysian language that means 'fizzy hair'. We feel that Jef Deconick was very much aware of this, because it looks like he went to great length to perfectly create and emphasize that beautiful hairtype in these striking sculptures. What exactly the role of the Chief Papua and his wife were is unclear to us, but they must have been culturally significant for Jef Deconinck to create these lasting works of beauty. If you like this pair of great quality sculptures as much as we do then you will love our price. Also, because perfect packing and worldwide delivery from our store to your door in just 4 days are complimentary. Maximum height x width x depth (male): 8 x 4 x 5 inches. Maximum height x width x depth (female): 8 x 4 x 4 inches. Male is marked: Chef Papou. and signed by artist Jef Deconinck. Female is marked: Mme. Papou. and signed by artist Jef Deconinck.
