About the Item

Italian 18th Century Marble Bust of a Girl Late 18th century bust of a girl, in the manner of Luigi Valadier Son of Andrea Valadier, a Provencal silversmith who moved to Rome in 1714, Luigi Valadier was the father of the silversmiths Filippo, Tommaso and Luigi as well as of the famous architect Giuseppe Valadier. He began his career in his father's workshop located in via del Babuino in Rome, then replacing his father in the direction of the works in 1759. Trusted goldsmith of various popes since 1769, he also worked for various high-ranking Italian and foreign clients, such as the Elector Charles Theodore of Bavaria (for whom he created a centerpiece with a silver reproduction of Trajan's Column) and Enrico Benedetto Stuart, duke of York and cardinal. In addition to these works, Pope Pius VI commissioned him a precious lapis lazuli chalice which he gave to King Stanislaus II Augusto Poniatowski or a large silver mirror for Palazzo Chigi in Rome. In 1770 he executed the grandiose high altar of the Cathedral of Monreale, near Palermo, with a rich and highly refined liturgical outfit. In 1785 its existence ended tragically during the making of the current bell tower of St. Peter's Basilica, with a diameter of 2.31 m and a weight of 8.95 tons: on the eve of the casting, Luigi committed suicide by jumping into the Tiber. Studies carried out on the books suggest that the motive was a dire economic situation, deriving from the fact that Valadier appeared to have entered into business with a partner who claimed 24% of the annual takings. The casting was then completed by his son Giuseppe.
