About the Item

A charming and small scale true pair of French 19th century Louis XVI st. Rouge Griotte marble and Ormolu busts. These wonderful Ormolu busts depict 'Jean qui rit et Jean qui pleure' Jean who laughs and Jean who cries, wearing helmets and military uniforms. This French phrase depicted in Ormolu describes someone who alternates between being joyful and sorrowful, capturing the duality of human emotions. Each marble pedestal is supported by an Ormolu bottom plate with a square marble base above. The marble base has a mottled and stepped plinth which introduces the statues above.
