Signed: Gaston Leroux, Paris, circa 1890. Measures: Height 29 inches (74 cm). Width 15 inches (38.1 cm). Depth 15 inches (38.1 cm). The opulent and extensively detailed version of Aida was inspired by ethnographic findings of the mid-19th century in ancient Egypt as well as the influences of theatre and costume design. Travelers to the East had often recorded their journeys, either in writing or in pictures, but the movement of Egyptomania was wider-reaching than Egyptology. The immensely popular vogue of Egyptomania is without doubt due to the success of performing arts in recreating this era, in particular, Giuseppe Verdi's Aida. Both the Cairo and Paris premieres created sensations so large that they influenced generations of artists from Alexander Cabanel to Cecil de Mille. In Aida, the ruins of Egypt were brought back to life in full color and scale before the eyes of a generation that would make history as romantics, adventurers and explorers. JOHN WARRINGTON WOOD British, 1839-1886 Bust of a Woman, almost certainly depicting Lady Layard (1870) Carrara marble signed to the reverse "WARRINGTON WOOD SCULPT ROMA 1870" Item # 405UGP17Q A very finely carved marble bust that almost certainly depicts Lady Layard (British, 1843-1912) at 27 years of age. While the bust is not titled, John Warrington Wood had a relationship with the family, first sculpting Lady Mary Enid Evelyn Layard's husband and cousin Henry Austin Layard the year before in London in 1869. Wood exhibited that bust at the Royal Academy in 1870 and the same year Lady Layard would have sat down with him in Rome for the completion of this bust. Interestingly, Henry Layard decided he did not like the bust that was completed of him and eventually re-commissioned Wood to complete the bust again 12 years later in 1881, that example held in the permanent collection of The National Gallery in London. The same year, John Warrington Wood executed a second bust of Lady Layard that is held in the permanent collection of the British Museum of Art (acc. no. OA.10557). The sculpture represents a kneeling naked woman, the features are fine and pleasant. The work is neat and delicate. The position of the woman calls for calm and tranquility. Our terracotta proof is a reduction of Stanislas Lami's marble entitled "Première Faute" which earned him the second medal at the Salon of 1891. The work represents a young woman kneeling, her arms modestly covering her face with closed eyes. At the dawn of the 20th century, this elegant statuette was part of the symbolist movement and announced the Art Nouveau movement. This beautiful work was included in the second edition of the artist's catalog raisonné. Related literature: Grégoire de Thoury, Stanislas Lami (1858-1944), catalog raisonné of sculptures, Paris, 2014, model listed under number FA12. More widely known for his masterful literary work, Stanilas Lami is an artist as much as a scholarly amateur. Son of the sculptor Alphonse Lami, grandson of the neoclassical painter Bidauld, son-in-law of the art dealer Charles Sedelmeyer, he benefited all his life from an environment favorable to the promotion and commissioning of his written or sculpted works. While he wrote his famous dictionaries of sculptors of the French School throughout his career, over around forty years, he also exhibited regularly at the Salon des Artistes français between 1882 and 1942.
