About the Item

Grouping of three works designed in the early 1930's by Geza de Vegh for Lamberton Scammell china works of Trenton, NJ. One large male bust 15 inches high and a male/female pair of heads on integral elongated square column 12 inches high. All marked as shown. From a distinguished collector, Beacon Hill, Boston. Geza Arpad de Vegh (1905-1989). Born in Hungary, he was a 1929 graduate of the University of Budapest with degrees in art and law. He came to the U.S. in 1930, settling in New York. He lived in Tinton Falls for 44 years before moving to Shrewsbury and then to Little Silver, New Jersey in 1987. He received a grant from the League of Nations to study in Vienna, Rome, the Vatican and Ghent, Belgium. In 1930, he worked on the west front of the cathedral of St. John the Divine, New York, and later was engaged to assist with the figurative sculpture that decorates the exterior of the Princeton University Chapel. He also worked on the Supreme Court building, Washington Rice Institute, TX., among other notable buildings. He became a citizen in 1936 and took a career turn to industrial design of ceramics, glass, metal and porcelain. He purchased the 17th century former grist mill in Tinton Falls in 1943, seeking an outlet for his ceramic plans. The basement floors of the mill included his ceramic studio and kilns. He developed a popular line of utilitarian pottery, using a Perth Amboy factory for mass-market production. He owned The Old Mill and was the force behind the later Old Mill Association, a not-for-profit organization that sought to turn the mill into a cultural center featuring music and theater.

A stunning 1940 Italian white porcelain lidded pot finely decorated with Zodiac figures from classical antiquity in 24k "Oro Zecchino" by Arrigo Finzi. Gilt ceramic lid. Signed Finzi Oro Zecchino Made in Italy on underside of potiche and Hutschenreuther on underside of cover. Finzi often hand painted his designs on Hutschenreuther and Heinrich blanks.
