Chinese Blue and White Jar with Scholars' Objects

About the Item

This porcelain storage jar has a rounded, tapered form and is brightly glazed in the classic blue-and-white manner. The jar is decorated on three sides with cartouches enclosing still life vignettes of scholars' objects. Among the precious objects are stacks of books, vases, censers and scrolls, as well as auspicious symbols such as the diamond mirror and the flaming pearl of wisdom. The quadrilobe cartouches are contrasted by an allover cracked ice pattern (binglei) dotted with plum blossoms.
