Kangxi Blue & White Chinese Porcelain Jar w/ One Hundred Treasures Motif, c 1750

About the Item

A very lovely Kangxi Chinese porcelain ginger jar with hand-painted, blue overglaze decoration with "one hundred treasures" motif. Jar has original porcelain lid painted with blue double banding & peony. China, circa mid 1700's. The various flowers & objects depicted all represent a virtue or attribute. The peony is a symbol of spring, female beauty & reproduction, and also represents richness, honor & high social class. The white chrysanthemum represents nobility & elegance. It is also thought to attract good luck to the home & represent a life of ease. Chinese art is rich in symbolism. Since Chinese is a language with many homophones, with the sound of a word sounding much like the sound of a concept or series of words, it has given rise to a vast language of symbols that is transmitted in Chinese art & culture. For example, the word for "vase" is "ping" - which is a symbol for peace, since the word "vase" in Chinese sounds much like the word for "peace". Also, when shown with a wide variety of plants & flowers, the vase evokes a broad field of symbolisms including that of a receptacle; a Daoist symbol for the female principle.
