About the Item

A rare and beautiful ‘Grasshopper’ vase by Baccarat, made in France and designed for the Exposition Universelle (World’s Fair) in Paris in 1878. The vase is moulded glass and is modelled in the shape of a locust sitting on a mound of foliage with a cornet fan-shaped vase above it. The grasshopper has gold gilding to the body and legs, as well as to the upper wing. The lower wing has a delicate blue tinge – a very subtle, beautiful variation in the glass. The fan-shaped vase section and base are both of frosted glass, the upper part decorated with a pattern of floral tendrils. It is stamped ‘BACCARAT’ to the base. There is a small chip to the bottom of one of the corners of the base, a miniscule nibble to the rim, and some light scratches to the frosted glass, but overall it is in very nice condition. This model is listed as N° 227 in the 1878 Baccarat catalogue, and was only made between 1878 and 1893.
