About the Item

Berndt Friberg (Swedish, 1899-1981) joined Gustavsberg in 1934 and his work is considered as some of the finest examples of wheel thrown pottery of the 20th Century. Inspired by the ceramics of the Far East Friberg focused on both form and glaze with many of his pieces reflecting glazes more akin to ancient Chinese wares. In all his work Friberg reflected an unsurpassed level of craftmanship with his work shown and represented in many important museum collections around the world. This stunning Swedish miniature vase, made at Gustavsberg, is of round urn shape and decorated in satin blue haresfur patterned glazes and made by Berndt Friberg in 1964. The vase stands on a narrow round foot with an unglazed rim and slightly recessed and matt glazed base. The finely made vase is of wide round shape with a narrow short neck and fold back flat round rim with a narrow opening. The body of the vase is decorated in dark rich blue glazes with a fine slightly textured haresfur patterning to the surface. The vase bears an incised Friberg signature mark to the base along with an incised Gustavsberg mark and has an incised date letter mark F for 1964. Provenance: from a choice collection of Scandinavian pottery amassed by a private gentleman who sadly now has insufficient space to display these fine pieces. In good condition with light wear associated with age and use.
