About the Item

An early 20th century Arts & Crafts vase by American painter, engraver, sculptor, and ceramicist, Charles Volkmar (1841-1914). This diminutive art pottery vessel was hand-raised and decorated with a dark, mottled coppery-red glaze and a contrasting marbled ivory glaze around the mouth. The vase retains an old and darkened oval sticker/label on the shoulder that reads [?] 552. The base is marked with Volkmar's incised and underlined "V." cipher over "VOLKMAR" hand-written and underlined in dark ink. The vase measures 4 in. height x 4 in. diameter and is in good condition with a few small issues including a small indent inside the rim, a rough spot on top of the rim, and a glaze pop from the original firing. There are a few small scuffs/scratches and several grinding chips around the foot rim. Charles Volkmar was a pioneer of the American Art Pottery movement, recognized for his handmade and one-of-a-kind creations. His ceramics are included in the collections of The Metropolitan Museum of Art, The Brooklyn Museum, and the Newark Museum of Art. Volkmar was born in Baltimore and began his artistic education in Maryland. He studied fine art, pottery, and tile making in Paris for almost 15 years before returning to America to set up his first kiln at Greenpoint, Long Island in 1879. Volkmar enjoyed a long career as a respected ceramic artist, establishing other workshops in and around New York, eventually retiring from Charles Volkmar & Son [Leon] of Metuchen, New Jersey in 1911.

Wear consistent with age and use. Minor losses. Good condition with small issues: a tiny indent inside the rim, a rough spot on top of the rim, and a glaze pop on the body that appear to be from the original firing + a few small scratches and grinding chips on the foot rim.
