Clematis Patternd 1920s Danish 20 cm Matte Glazed Ceramic Vase by Herman Kähler

About the Item

This is the 1920s Danish 20 cm high ceramic vase by Herman Kähler. It comes with a baluster shaped body. It has a matte surface with parts of glossiness. A beautiful cow horn glazed pattern with light blue climbing Clematis flowers on a beige background. The gently hilly surface creates lots of shadows which creates a slightly three-dimensional effect. The underside is signed with the well known carved HAK logotype and a “Denmark” stamp in the clay mass. ____________________ 1872 the tile stove maker Joachim C H Kähler decided to retire and handed over the company to two of his seven children, his two sones Herman August Kähler, 1846-1917, and Carl Fredrik Kähler. 1875 Herman decided to start on his own and had a new workshop built. Carl Fredrik continued to run the tile stove production until 1896 when he chose to sell. It was at that time Herman began seriously to work with artistic design and also experimenting with new glazes, the work that within a decade, after started a collaboration with the architect Vilhelm Klein when ware and ornaments began to be produced in a much larger scale, made the company known worldwide. It’s was also Herman how introduce the well known logotype HAK, designed by Svend Hammershøi. Over all the years, since its foundation in 1839, the company remained in the Kähler family. So in 1974, the time come when again two brothers, Herman Jörgen Kähler and Nils Joakim Kähler, choose to go their separate ways. This time the company closed down.
