About the Item
Charming vintage pottery vase features a Modernist elongated barrel form and complex glaze decor. A prancing horse motif is done in white majolica glaze with bright red, teal, and gold accents; the motif is outlined in sgraffito technique. The sculptural stepped elements on the vase are accentuated with red and gold scalloped bands that are also outlined in sgraffito technique. The colorful decor stands out against hand-brushed matte mocha brown background glaze, and glossy majolica glaze, done in slight relief, adds more texture variation and visual interest to the piece.
The glazing style and design are both characteristic of Fratelli Fanciullacci designs; the horse motif appeared on multiple pieces done by the studio, with several reiterations. The playful, colordul Modernist decor is also reminiscent of Aldo Londi pieces, especially the ones that were created for Raymor. The vase is marked on the bottom with the model number and "Italy"; it is missing its distributor sticker. Fratelli Fanciullacci worked with multiple importers in mid 20th century.
Striking vase with elegant form, high quality craftsmanship, and statement piece presence will make a perfect addition to a wide range of interiors, from Traditional to Modern, Transitional, Modern Country, Organic Modern, Arts and Crafts, Collected, or Contemporary.

By Fratelli Fanciullacci
Located in Clifton Springs, NY
Unusual vintage majolica vase with complex glaze in dark Bordeau oxblood red and various shades of grey colors features bands of applied reliefs in shape of abstract, graphic flowers. Top and bottom parts of the vase and bands of relief decor are decorated with gold. Monochromatic white glaze was used on inner surfaces, accentuating the palest grey shades in the main glaze.
The vase is signed on the bottom with model number and "Italy"; while it does not have the usual the manufacturer's mark, "FF", the glaze that was used for this series is well documented to Fratelli Fanciullacci. It was common for Italian ceramics manufacturers to omit marking their pieces with their logos if the they were intended for American or European distributors; instead, they would only mark it "Italy" to allow the distributor to use their stickers, or rarely, they would mark the piece with "studio tame" for "distributor name" if the distributor did not object. Pieces from this particular series were made by Fratelli Fanciullacci with their own mark, for Ebeling Reuss...
