Highly Decorative French Enamelled Vase, Attributed to Samson of Paris, c.1880

About the Item

Highly Decorative French Enamelled Vase, Attributed to Samson of Paris, c.1880 A richly ornamental and strikingly colourful late 19th-century French porcelain vase, attributed to the Parisian firm of Samson, Edmé et Cie. Exemplifying the exuberance of the Rococo Revival, the vase recalls the decorative traditions of both Sèvres and Minton in its encrusted surface and hand-painted florals. The vase is of baluster form, with a flared and ruffled rim and an unusual three-handled configuration. The entire surface is adorned with profuse raised polychrome enamelling in soft green, pink, yellow, cobalt, and claret tones, forming an intricate arrangement of scrolling floral and foliate motifs. Three framed cartouches on the body each display a finely painted bouquet of flowers in vivid hues, adding an elegant focal contrast to the textured background. The base is unmarked, consistent with much of Samson’s work from this period, which was often created as decorative homage to earlier European porcelain styles. The piece is formed in hard-paste porcelain, and the underside shows an unglazed footrim typical of French manufacture of the period. Dimensions: Height: 31 cm Width (across handles): 20 cm Depth: 20 cm Condition: In good decorative condition overall. There are minor areas of rubbing and wear to the enamel, as expected with age, but no chips, cracks or restoration are visible. The enamel remains richly coloured and textural, and the vase presents beautifully from all angles.
