About the Item
This is a very ancient Japanese ceramic jar, a type of pottery known as Tamba ware.
Tamba ware is pottery fired in historic kilns in Hyogo Prefecture (west of Osaka), located in the area indicated by the red circle on the map of Japan. Its origins are believed to date back to around the 12th century. Japan is home to six traditional kilns, known as the Six Ancient Kilns, which continue to operate today, with this Tamba kiln being one of them.
Antique Tamba ware jars are relatively rare, even within Japan, and difficult to obtain.
This jar's distinctive features include its characteristically Tamba-yaki reddish-brown base and the beautiful emerald-green pattern created by the natural glaze. Additionally, ash that fell in the kiln on one side creates a granular texture, lending it a wabi-sabi aesthetic. The gradation of the natural glaze color and the base color adds interest.
The jar also has minimal distortion, creating a well-defined silhouette. This is a distinctive feature of Tamba, exuding a refined beauty through its symmetrical design.
It is estimated to have been created around the 16th century, dating from the late Muromachi to Azuchi-Momoyama periods. Similar vases have been featured in art books, and we have attached a photo for reference.
This vases have tiny cracks in the base, which can cause fresh flowers to leak through when filled with water.
To display fresh flowers, fill a regular container with water and place it inside the vases. See the red circle in the detailed image. However, apart from this, there are no major defects or repairs, and the vases appear to be in relatively good condition.
This small but striking piece is highly recommended. We have also priced it at an affordable price, hoping to introduce the appeal of antiques to more people.
