ABOUT MEIPING PORCELAIN Korean Maebyeong/Meiping porcelain is celebrated for its refined form and often features celadon glaze with inlaid or incised decoration. While the term “meiping” is Chinese, it is widely used in English-language references to both Chinese and Korean vases of this elegant form. Korean Maebyeong (Meiping) porcelain refers to a classic type of Korean ceramic vase that was especially prominent during the Goryeo Dynasty (918–1392) and later during the Joseon Dynasty (1392–1897). The term "meiping" (literally “plum vase”) is originally Chinese (梅瓶), but it is also used to describe similar Korean forms. Key Characteristics of Korean Maebyeong (Meiping) Porcelain: 1. Shape: • Tall, elegant, and slightly ovoid with a narrow neck and small mouth. • Broad shoulders tapering down to a narrower base. • Designed originally to hold plum blossoms, hence the name “plum vase.” 2. Period & Style: • Goryeo Dynasty: Known for exquisite celadon-glazed maebyeong vases, often with inlaid decoration (called sanggam technique), featuring cranes, clouds, lotus, or peonies. • Joseon Dynasty: Continued the form but with more austere and minimalist designs, especially in white porcelain (baekja). 3. Cultural Significance: • Maebyeong vases are among the most admired works of Korean ceramic art. • Celadon maebyeong from the Goryeo period is considered one of Korea’s greatest contributions to world ceramic history. 4. Function: • Originally used for holding flowers, wine, or as burial items. • Later appreciated as decorative art.
