Korean Carved Celadon Vase, Maebyeong, Goryeo Style, Early 20th Century

About the Item

A wonderful Korean celadon vase, called a maebyeong, in the Goryeo style, but of early 20th century manufacture. The maebyeong vase with a beautiful profile of Classic Chinese meiping form, with a wide, splayed foot, narrow waist, rounded body with high shoulders, and a small cup mouth. The body masterfully and robustly carved with a bold design of large flowering peony sprays. The foot with a carved design of overlapping lotus petals. Glazed all-over, somewhat unevenly, the subtle grayish-green celadon glaze heavily crazed, reminiscent of the best Goryeo celadons. One side of the vase more heavily glazed with a glassy finish, the glaze pooling beautifully in the carved areas. The other side of the vase with a more matte finish, and tending more towards the gray. The glaze thinning considerably towards the foot, with some recessed areas left unglazed, and exposing some firing cracks to the stoneware body, With six spur marks to the foot. Provenance: Bonhams 2014 Estate of Charlotte Lawrence Fergusson (1913-2013) Estate of General Robert Fergusson (1911-2001).
