Korean Goryeo Celadon Glazed Slip Inlaid Bottle Vase, 12th/13th Century, Korea

About the Item

A delightful small Korean Goryeo ware celadon glazed stoneware bottle vase with sangam slip inlay, Goryeo Dynasty, 12th - 13th century, Korea. The small bottle vase of typical form and crafted from a porcelaneous stoneware with a pear shaped body, skinny neck, and everted mouth, all set on a short ring foot. The bottle decorated with sangam inlay, featuring nine chrysanthemum blossoms divided in groups of three to the body, and a band of yeoui (ruyi) to the shoulder. The entirety of the vase covered in a grayish green celadon glaze. The design is created using the sangam technique, an inlay technique developed during the Goryeo Dynasty, in which designs are carved into the clay, then filled with contrasting colored clay, in this case, white, before being glazed and fired.
