Scheurich Large Foligno Vase, West German Pottery 1970s

About the Item

Large sculptural West Germany pottery vase features molded Foligno decor, incorporating bands of stylized flowers, and semi-matte ochre and brown glaze. The inner surfaces are glazed in monochromatic glossy chocolate brown glaze. The combination of semi-matte glaze and organic, earthy color palette emphasized the texture and rhythmic quality of the decor. In late 1960s and 1970s Scheurich ceramics were characterized by brown and green color schemes with molded decors inspired by different patterns from nature, such as Amsterdam, resembling tulip bulbs, Koralle, that looks like knots in the wood, and Jura, that look like fossils, or inspired by ancient cultures, such as Inca. Majority of the forms and decors were created by Heinz Siery, who joined Scheurich in 1955. The vase is marked with stamped model number and W Germany on the bottom and white and purple paper label below the rim. The paper label was in use from 1970 to 1979.
