About the Item

Fairyland Lustre Covered Vase Wedgwood Circa 1925 This exceptional Wedgwood Fairyland Lustre Rainbow vase represents one of the most vibrant and coveted designs from the Fairyland Lustre collection. Also known as the "Bifrost" pattern, this spectacular treasure showcases nearly every color of the spectrum rendered in lustrous glazes that create an otherworldly shimmer. The remarkable technical achievement of this piece exemplifies why Fairyland Lustre remains among the most celebrated works ever produced by the Wedgwood factory. The vase features a mesmerizing panorama of iridescent hues that transition around its body. The luminous surface treatment creates a captivating play of light that shifts and changes depending on viewing angle and illumination. This prismatic quality is the hallmark of Daisy Makeig-Jones' Rainbow pattern, which draws inspiration from the rainbow bridge of Norse mythology. Daisy Makeig-Jones, the visionary artist behind Fairyland Lustre, joined Wedgwood in 1909 and revolutionized the company's artistic direction. Her fantastical designs represented a dramatic departure from traditional Wedgwood aesthetics and proved commercially successful during a period of financial uncertainty. When Wedgwood faced potential ruin during World War I, Makeig-Jones' imaginative creations appealed to collectors seeking escapism and fantasy, effectively saving the company. Her remarkable twenty-year tenure at Wedgwood produced works that combined technical virtuosity with boundless creativity, establishing her as one of the most innovative ceramic artists of the early 20th century. The underside bears the distinctive "Portland Vase" Wedgwood mark and the pattern #Z5366 Literature: Des Fontaines, Una, Wedgwood Fairyland Lustre: The Work of Daisy Makeig-Jones, Born-Hawes, New York, 1975, p. 127.
