About the Item

The Kulan ashtray was first produced in the 1970s by the renowned Gustavsberg porcelain factory in Sweden. Made from heat-resistant melamine plastic, it was notable for its sleek, modern design and wide range of vibrant colors. Although the Kulan was introduced in the 1970s, its form has earlier roots. A similar concept was developed during the 1920s at the Bauhaus school in Weimar, Germany. In the school’s metal workshop, designers Marianne Brandt and Wilhelm Wagenfeld were creating modern household objects. Brandt, known for her teapots, cups, and lighting designs, also created a metal ashtray featuring a central sphere used to extinguish cigarettes. Its lid, slightly funnel-shaped and tightly sealed, would open to allow ash and cigarette ends to drop inside—combining function and form in a quintessential Bauhaus manner. Wagenfeld, meanwhile, became widely known for his iconic glass table lamp. Unaware of this earlier Bauhaus model, Swedish artist Gunnar Larson (husband of ceramicist Lisa Larson) designed a new version in 1969 while working at Gustavsberg. His prototype was made using cardboard, masking tape, and a ping pong ball. When presented to the factory leadership, the concept was immediately approved for production. Gustavsberg manufactured the Kulan in melamine until production ceased. Thereafter, Swedish company AB Ensto-Idealplast continued making it. The ashtray measures 60 mm in height and 130 mm in diameter. In the late 1990s, Larson was accused by Italian design house Alessi of copying Marianne Brandt’s 1926 Bauhaus ashtray. The dispute led to a legal battle, which Larson ultimately won, confirming that his version had been conceived independently.
