Art Deco English Football Stamford Bridge Tantalus by Hukin & Heath

About the Item

Silver Hallmarks for 1937 Art Deco From our Tantalus collection, we are delighted to offer this Art Deco Stamford Bridge Tantalus by Hukin & Heath. The Tantalus modelled with two decanters locked into place by a silver plate frame raised upon four linear feet. The frame with loop handle to the top which opens upon unlocking pivots backwards to release the decanter bottles. To the front of the Tantalus an engraving reads ‘presented by the Stamford Bridge Stadium Ltd.’ Giving it very good Chelsea football club provenance and we believe it was likely presented as a gift to either a member of staff or player. Each glass bottle of square shape with sterling silver collars and faceted stoppers. The collars are hallmarked sterling, Birmingham by Hukin and Heath and dated to 1937 Art Deco period. The underside of the locking mechanism is stamped Hukin and Heath (H&H) with the model number 2762. The Tantalus comes complete with working lock and tasseled key. Stamford Bridge is a football stadium in Fulham, home of Premier League club Chelsea. Stamford Bridge has a capacity of 40,173 and is the ninth largest venue of the 2024–25 Premier League season and the eleventh largest football stadium in England. Stamford Bridge opened in 1877, the stadium was used by London Athletic Club until 1905, when new owner Gus Mears founded Chelsea Football Club to occupy the ground; Chelsea have played their home games there ever since. It has undergone major changes over the years, most recently in the 1990s when it was renovated into a modern, all-seater stadium. Hukin and Heath were important Silversmiths and electroplaters of Birmingham (1855-1953). Established by Jonathan Wilson Hukin and John Thomas Heath. They registered Birmingham marks in 1875 and London marks in 1879. The firm began working in conjunction with Dr. Christopher Dresser in 1877 and some of their most notable designs have Dresser influence. Silver Plate refers to a method of applying a thin layer of silver to a base metal such as brass. Therefore it refers to an item which is not solid silver but plated to the outer coating. Art Deco was a style of visual arts, architecture, and product design that first appeared in France in the 1910s. It flourished in the United States and Europe during the 1920s to early 1930s. It was hugely prevalent through styling and design of the exterior and interior of anything from large structures to small objects and even influenced fashion and jewellery. Art Deco has influenced bridges, buildings, ships, ocean liners, trains, cars, trucks, buses, furniture, and everyday objects like radios and vacuum cleaners. It has become extremely popular today and is highly desirable to collectors and trendsetters in the fashion industry.

Excellent condition measuring 18" x 6 5/8" x 1". Hukin & Heath (active 1855 – 1953) Hukin & Heath was an important British manufacturer, active between 1855 and 1953, specializing in silver and electroplate. The company is best known for its skillfully manufactured reproductions of Persian and Japanese pieces, mainly silver and electroplated wares, that were produced under the guidance of Dr. Christopher Dresser. The production of the Hukin & Heath eastern-like pieces experienced its peak between the 1870s and 1880s. The business was established in 1855 by Jonathan Wilson Hukin and John Thomas Heath. The company entered the market as manufacturing silversmiths and electroplaters. The company’s silver mark was entered in 1875 in the Birmingham Assay Office, which was followed by the entry of the mark of the firm’s founders, Jonathan Wilson Hukin and John Thomas Heath, in 1879 in the London Assay Office. By that time, Hukin & Heath already had several showrooms at 19 Charterhouse Street, Holborn, and a workshop at Imperial Works, Great Charles Street, Birmingham. As for the company’s trade mark, it combines the initials H & H, standing for Hukin & Heath, that is accompanied by an eagle. One of the brightest pages of Hukin & Heath's history is the time when the company collaborated with Britain’s most famous independent designer, Dr. Christopher Dresser, who promoted and contributed enormously to the British Art Nouveau...
