About the Item

Gorgeous oval centerpiece, produced around 1890. It responds to a French typology called sourtout, made up of independent pieces, two in this case, that overlap to form a central piece. The upper piece, commonly called a “planter”, is made of silver metal with a rich decoration based on curved lines and arabesques of stylized nature (which create the handles and legs) and leaves and flowers. It rests on four leafy feet, the hallmark of the goldsmith Victor Saglier. This undulation responds to the Art Nouveau style, which occurred at the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th. The lower tray presents the same style, with a beautiful polylobed profile. This planter shows, on its lower part, the mark or hallmark of the famous Parisian goldsmith Enghien Victor Saglier (initials VS on both sides of a ship). Victor Saglier (born 1809) was a master goldsmith active in Paris, highly regarded for his Art Nouveau style work. He was active from 1842 to 1894. By the end of the 19th century, he had founded his own studio in Paris and collaborated with other great artists of the day, such as Gallé, Legras and Daum and created pieces for Majorelle. On his death, the company became Saglier Frères, run ever since by his brothers Eguène and André, until the latter's death in 1948. The term "Surtout" appeared in the last years of the reign of Louis XIV with the arrival of the French service. The centerpiece was used to display serving items such as salt cellars, spice boxes, oil dishes, vinegar dishes, and sugar bowls—items that remained on the table throughout the meal.
