Italy Mid-18th Century White Majolica Center Piece by Pasquale Antonibon

About the Item

Magnificient and exceptional centrepiece in white majolica with polychromes flowers and branches produced around 1740 - 1770 by the ancient Pasquale Antonibon Manufacture based in Nove di Bassano, in the Veneto region, Italy. The ecxellent art of craftmenship is shown in the untmeless beauty of this piece. The centrepiece is composed by a tray on 6 little carved feet, 4 salt shakers shaped as shell and a large salt shaker on the top, 2 sprinkle sugars and 2 juds with lid for oil and vinegar. This is a rare piece to find in such a perfect conditions and complete in every part. In the Museum of majolica of Bassano, it is present one similar piece but is not complete cause the topper salt shaker is lost. In 1752 Pasquale Antonibon, descendant of a family of majolica producers, began to experiment with the production of porcelain and therefore in 1762 his efforts were crowned with success and the Antonibon factory obtained a privilege from the Republic of Venice for the porcelain factory in Nove di Bassano. Around 1770 the management passed into the hands of Pasquale's son, named Gian Battista Antonibon who lost ownership in 1794. Unusual 18th Century Venetian Center Piece in Carved Walnut Wood, Circa 1780
Located in Dallas, TX
Although the Rococo in France (where the style originated) lasted from roughly 1725 to 1760, other countries in Europe produced period art and furniture until the late 18th century. One such country was Italy and in particular, Venice, where this unusual carved walnut centerpiece was hand-carved, circa 1780. A large shell-form bowl with volute leaf embellishments is being held by three putti emerging from an undulating base. The wave pattern is reminiscent of a foaming sea, further indicated by the stylized dolphin tails emerging from the spray. All of the tails are textured with a lozenge-patterned background, protruding as high-relief elements. On the underside, the scalloped tips of the water swing down in three areas, forming well-disguised feet. The carvings of the centerpiece are quite exceptional, given the height and breadth of the piece. A wonderful decorative accessory for any large table, our walnut Venetian centerpiece...
