About the Item
This vibrant three-piece faïence centerpiece was crafted in Rouen, France, in the mid-20th century, drawing on the city’s centuries-old ceramic tradition. Known for its richly ornamented earthenware, Rouen has been a major center of faïence production since the 1500s, celebrated for its bold palette and intricate floral and geometric designs.
The set includes a lidded tureen resting on four paw feet, a matching domed lid with finial, and a shaped under tray. Hand-painted in classic Rouen colors of deep cobalt blue and burnt orange on a white ground, the piece features stylized floral sprays, latticework panels, and a charming anthropomorphic face at one end of the tureen. The platter is centered with a floral basket motif and bordered with scalloped edging that echoes the tureen’s profile.
Stamped “R” underneath and in excellent condition with minor wear consistent with age. A striking mid-century decorative accent that beautifully reinterprets antique French faïence for the modern collector.
