About the Item
A rare and exquisitely detailed pair of ceramic fruit topiary vases, attributed to Ceramica Nove di Bassano, Italy, circa 1950s. Entirely hand-assembled and glazed in a soft ivory tone, these decorative sculptures evoke the timeless elegance of classical still life while revealing the hand of the artisan in every curve and leaf.
Each piece features a lush, overflowing composition of glossy ceramic grapes and naturalistic vine leaves, sculpted in relief and arranged in a conical form atop a neoclassical footed urn. The glazing is delicately nuanced — a warm, off-white with subtle tonal variations that enhance the depth and shadow of the modeling.
What makes this pair particularly remarkable is that one of the two bases is handwritten “Campione”, indicating that it was originally created as a prototype or reference piece by the ceramist. In traditional artisanal practice, the “campione” was shown to the client for approval before crafting its counterpart — which appears to be the second vase in this set. This detail suggests a custom commission, adding a layer of uniqueness and historical depth to the ensemble.
Marked on the other with “Italy” and the production number 36/131, the pair reflects the tradition of limited-run, studio-made décor from the Nove di Bassano ceramic district — an area celebrated for its refinement and handcraft excellence.
Both vases are in excellent condition, and together they form a dialogue between model and replica, individuality and intention. A beautiful collector’s piece.
