About the Item

Rare 1930's Italian black glazed majolica urn with asymmetric handles which are silvered along with rim and foot and an orange glazed stylized fox set within an arched niche. Designed by Ezio Cocchioni. Signed underside 'Deruta'. Documentation: S. A. MAIOLICHE DERUTA E CONSORZIO ITALIANO MAIOLICHE ARTISTICHE, Catalogo N. 8. Special thank you to Giovanni Baiano of Antica Fornace Deruta for sharing his family's historical archive with me. Last image shows three other related works. In the 1930s, the ceramist Ezio Cocchioni collaborated with some of the Umbrian ceramic factories that were part of the "CIMA" (Italian Consortium of Artistic Maioliche), including "La Salamandra" active in Deruta, in the province of Perugia, under the artistic direction first of Alpinolo Magnini and then of Nino Strada. In the post-war years he continued his activity as a ceramic decorator at the " Maioliche Deruta " factory. Some of his ceramics, with modern shapes and the typical small flower decoration, are preserved in the Regional Museum of Ceramics in Deruta.
