About the Item

A highly decorative Art Deco ceramic jug by Burleigh Ware, produced by Burgess & Leigh in England around the 1930s. This striking example of tropical revival style merges bold form with detailed relief work, capturing the era’s fascination with exoticism in decorative arts. The body is divided into three registers: the base encircled with a frieze of elephants in low relief, the middle section with tropical foliage, and the uppermost register featuring stylised long-necked birds, likely cranes or swans. The curled handle, shaped like a palm frond, is embellished with a vertical row of miniature elephants. Finished in a luminous mint green glaze with beige highlights that accentuate the sculptural quality of the relief, the jug measures 23.5 cm tall, 18 cm wide, and 12.5 cm deep. Stamped to the underside with the Burleigh Ware Burgess & Leigh mark and mould number 202. In very good vintage condition with minor age wear. A collectible example of 1930s British ceramics, where Art Deco meets tropical fantasy.
