About the Item

This is a 1970s Modernist West German ceramic jug, often referred to as "Fat Lava" pottery. The piece features a bold and striking design typical of the era, with a glossy brown glaze on the upper body and vibrant orange accents at the base, which include intricate embossed or stamped patterns. The jug's geometric handle and angular shape enhance its modernist aesthetic, making it a standout example of mid-century design. Pieces like this were highly popular during the mid-20th century and remain sought after by collectors of West German pottery. This 1970s Modernist Fat Lava ceramic jug showcases an eye-catching and unconventional shape. The jug has a flattened, oval-shaped body with a wide base that tapers slightly upward. The body is adorned with embossed circular motifs around the base, often a hallmark of West German Fat Lava pottery, adding depth and texture to the design. The handle is geometric and angular, with a triangular cross-section that contrasts sharply with the organic curves of the jug’s body. It extends vertically from the flat top of the jug, adding a sculptural quality. The spout is wide and flared, giving the jug both functionality and a bold, artistic look. The color palette is quintessentially mid-century modern. The glossy brown glaze dominates the upper portion, lending it a rich and earthy tone. The base features a vibrant and contrasting orange glaze that highlights the embossed patterns, with the two colors separated by a dark band of black or deep brown glaze that creates a crisp visual break. The glossy, high-fired finish on the jug gives it a reflective surface that enhances the depth of the colors and highlights the intricate details of the texture and shape. This piece perfectly captures the bold and experimental spirit of 1970s West German pottery. It's in perfect condition.

Fat Lava German Colored And Glazed Ceramic Pitcher
Located in Prato, Tuscany
We kindly suggest you read the whole description, as with it we try to give you detailed technical and historical information to guarantee the authenticity of our objects. Peculiar and original German ceramic jug colored with a beautiful shade of red, black, and a vivid orange; it has a simple shape but at the same time innovative and modernist; the beautiful and vivid colors are balanced and proportioned respecting a minimalist design; the glazing of the jar was obtained by first laying down one color, proceeding to fix it by firing it in a kiln, then the same procedure was performed for the other colors; on the bottom bears the traditional mark found on this type of object, indicating that the object was created in a limited series with the jug number and the model number; unfortunately, on our jug this mark is barely legible, but it exists and allows us to say that this object was produced between 1968 and 1971 in a craft workshop in the city of Dresden (then in East Germany), an important center of porcelain and ceramic production. "Fat lava" is the name given to a certain style of East German art...
