'Banjo Play' Zerline Balten as a Banjo Player, Goldscheider Vienna, circa 1930

About the Item

Very rare Art Deco Goldscheider art ceramic figurine around 1930. Shown is Zerline Balten, a Viennese dancer and actress who accompanies herself on a banjo in her 'fantasy dance'. The young lady wears a winter costume, sweater and skirt in delicate lilac with stylized floral decoration; Fur hems, also on the wide sleeves and as a ruff, with a matching cap. Leaning slightly to the right, she is playing the banjo, behind her is a pink Pierrot figure playing the cymbals. The figure is based on a stepped, black round base, artist's signature 'Dakon' on the pierrot's jacket. Designed by STEPHAN DAKON (1904 - 1997), one of the most important designerswho worked for the Goldscheider manufactory from 1924 until the mid-fifties. Dakon designed this model circa 1927.
