Chelsea-Derby Pierced Chestnut Basket or Dish Porcelain, English, circa 1770

About the Item

This is a rare porcelain desert dish or chestnut basket made by the Chelsea-Derby factory during the 18th Century, circa 1770. This pierced, reticulated Desert Dish or Chestnut Basket is made of porcelain with two moulded side handles. There are three stilt or patch marks in a triangle on the base ( from firing the piece on pads of clay) which is a characteristic of this Chelsea-Derby period, post 1756. The pattern is beautifully hand painted with exotic birds, probably Ibis, in an outdoor setting among bushes and trees, all in many bold colours, within a hand gilded border to the central well. The outer pierced border is hand painted in a soft light blue with further gilded detail. This piece is marked to the base with a hand painted gold anchor mark. This is a beautifully painted example of Chelsea-derby english porcelain and displays very well despite the previous damage Notes on Chelsea Derby Porcelain. Chelsea Porcelain was made from 1745 to 1784 in a factory built by Nicholas Sprimont, a Huguenot Silversmith with the aim of focusing on luxury porcelain. The factory produced only soft paste porcelain. This porcelain production was compared to what was done at the time in continental Europe but Chelsea was the first important porcelain factory in the United Kingdom. The factory was bought in 1769 by William Duesbury, owner of the Derby factory and for the next 14 years up to about 1783, the Chelsea and Derby concerns operated together. The production of this period, in neoclassical style, cannot easily be distinguished from the production of Derby. It is named Chelsea-Derby porcelain.

Condition:
Repaired: chip to rim with associated cracks that have been repaired. Wear consistent with age and use. Some Damage; Two Base hairline cracks. Chip to edge on one long edge with associated cracks that have been repaired. Some other cracks in the well that do not go through to the base. Despite the damage this is a very rare piece and displays very well.
