About the Item
A small pear-shaped milk jug, with a transfer-printed outline, filled with wet enamels, in the Chinese Mating Chickens pattern; the rear with symbols of pomegranate, leaves and censer.
Prov: Taylor Collection; John Wilson Antiques 2008.
Catalogue Entry:
Of small pear shape on a high footrim; sparrow beak lip and simple loop handle. The body transfer outlined en-suite to Colection #239 in brown and painted in a soft mix of the usual famille rose palette of the Bow transfers in puce-pinks, yellow, plum, green and blue beneath a brown rim. The front with Chinese Mating Chickens (Peeping Tom) pattern; the rear with symbols of pomegranate, leaves and censer. Blue tinted glaze. Green straw translucency. Base. H.3.0in (7.7cm)
Another, Joseph M. Handley Collection, (1991, 8.9), as circa 1770-72. The same decoration in slightly brighter colours is on a teapot and cover, Bulwer Collection, Norwich Castle Museum, 1946.70.656 as ‘circa 1755 or later’, illustrated Emmerson 1992, pp 127.
