Game Pie Dish Majolica Minton Victorian Mid-19th Century

About the Item

Majolica oval game terrine, featuring a palette of green, blue, brown, and ochre. Adorned with a woven basket encircled by an oak leaf garland, the lid showcases a prominent relief depicting a hunting trophy composed of game birds (hare, mallard duck, partridge, etc.). The interior boasts exquisite turquoise enamel. Marked underneath. Quite rare it is complete with a white ceramic dish to be able to cook directly your tureen in the oven in a bain marie, in quite perfect condition. Game pies, consisting of poultry, rabbit, or venison encased in pastry, have long been a staple of English cuisine. However, vessels specifically designed for game pies didn't emerge until the 18th century. Increasing shortages of wheat made pastry crusts increasingly impractical, leading households, including the royal household, to opt for crustless game pies as a cost-effective alternative. Josiah Wedgwood popularized game pie containers, simplifying these culinary endeavors by securely holding the pie without the need for pastry. This tureen retains its original ceramic liner, which ensures the pie's integrity during baking; afterward, the liner, along with the pie, would be transferred to the decorative game pie terrine for serving. Minton, alongside prestigious faience manufacturers such as Spode, Davenport, Ridgway, and Coalport, played a pioneering role in the English porcelain industry. Located in Staffordshire, the company became renowned for its delicately crafted white porcelain and vibrant color schemes. During the Victorian era, "Minton blue," characterized by its refreshing azure hue, gained considerable popularity. The factory produced a wide array of items, including fine porcelain tableware, creamware, and high-quality majolica. Minton distinguished itself with intricate decorations and gilding, often executed by artists from the Sèvres porcelain factory in France, who contributed to its artistic allure. Condition: Excellent, with the original liner intact. Minor abrasions present.
