About the Item
This is a fine and rare, large / very large ironstone pottery jug or pitcher in the Fenton shape made by Mason's Ironstone, of Lane Delph, Staffordshire, England, circa 1818.
This is a very substantial large heavy example weighing about 1.75 Kg unpacked and indicative of the early pieces, which had more iron in the boy material.
The jug is octagonal with a dragon loop handle and tapered outwards slightly towards the base. The piece is profusely and richly hand- decorated with bold enamels of cobalt blue, burnt orange, red, salmon and green, all in different shades with much additional gilded detail. The pattern is generally known as the "SCHOOL HOUSE" pattern but it is also listed in some books as the "GAY JAPAN" pattern with the Masons Collectors Club listing it as the "ROSE AND APPLE" pattern.
It is fully marked to the base with one of the recorded Mason's Impressed marks stating: MASONS PATENT IRONSTONE CHINA, in two lines, together with the number 13 which may be a size mark.
Overall a very beautiful, impressive, large, fully marked MASONS Ironstone Jug or Pitcher in one of their very sought after patterns.

This is a very rare shaped early small Jug or pitcher, hand painted in the Fence Japan gilded pattern, made by Mason's Ironstone, Lane Delph, England and dating to circa 1813-1820.
This jug is hand potted in a very rare shape with a loop handle and a pouring spout to the rim.
The pattern is hand painted in the Fence Japan pattern, with hand gilded highlights as illustrated on page 89 of a guide to Mason's patent ironstone patterns, circa 1813-1848, published by The Mason's Collectors' Club.
This jug is unmarked to the base, as was often the case in this period but it is definitely made by Mason's Ironstone with a similar jug illustrated on page 188 of Geoffrey Godden's guide to Masons China...
