About the Item
This is an Ironstone pottery, Jug or Pitcher made by the Mason's factory at Lane Delph, Staffordshire, England and is decorated in the Table and Flower Pot Pattern, fully stamped to the base and dating to the earliest period of Mason's Ironstone production, circa 1818.
This is a very rare shaped Masons Jug with a loop handle having a thumb spur. A jug in this shape is illustrated on page 189 of the book: Mason's China and the Ironstone Wares by Geoffrey Godden and published by The Antique Collectors' Club.
The decoration is one of Mason's favorite oriental themed patterns called the Table and Flower Pot or Gold jar pattern, This pattern shows a Chinese Vase or Jar holding a large flower with one face gilded, stood next to a small table with a fruit bowl, with a Swan sat on a nest between them. The pattern has richly hand painted enamels, over-glaze in green, blue, orange, brown, ochre, puce and pink all in varying shades. This jug also has an additional border pattern around the top rim and spout, both on the outside and inside. The pattern is illustrated on Page 104 of a Guide to Mason's Patent Ironstone Patterns, circa 1813-1848, produced by The Mason's Collectors Club.
The base has the Masons large crown and banner colour washed in green, which is recorded as being probably the earliest printed mark, indicating a date of circa 1813-1820, making this jug one of the earliest pieces of Mason's, as their Ironstone was only produced from 1813, which is late George 111 period.
Overall, a rare jug in a distinctive pattern.
