About the Item

Charming vintage decorative plaque depicts mother and child, most possibly Madonna and Child, done in relief and decorated with majolica glazes. Teal and blue glazes, used for the dress and the headdress, contrast beautifully with burnt orange used as a background color. Abstract palm tree design, added next to her left shoulder, adds movement and interest to the composition. Madonna's face and hands and Child's body are highly detailed; white glaze is used in thin layer, letting the pinkish color of the clay, characteristic to the region, to be slightly visible and creating additional definition and visual interest. Thick and relatively heavy plaque has 2 openings formed in top part that can be used to hand it for display. It is signed on the bottom with "Italy I.C.S" and company's fish mark with an asterisk next to it; the asterisk might be an artist's mark. I.C.S. was founded in 1927 by Berlin-born Moses Malamerson in Vietri Sul Mar on Amalfi coast in Italy. I.C.S quickly gained recognition by participating in multiple major European and American expositions and art competitions available, attracting many artists that were looking to escape the economic depression and political upheaval of 1930s. I.C.S. can claim the honor of having employed all the famous artists of the German (Tedesco) Period, including Studemann, Kowalski, Hannasch, Dolker, Cassetta, Gambone, Procida, and Giovannino, among others. In the mid 1930’s ICS entered into an agreement with the Cantagalli factory to display its products in their studios, adding to the fame and visibility of the company. However, I.C.S. seized their operations in 1940 due to political situation in Europe at that time.
