About the Item
Italian artists Pietro Melandri and Paolo Zoli glazed majolica round shaped vase for ’La Faiance’.
Faenza Italy 1915 ca.
This wonderful little masterpiece, depicting floral in shades of green to blue figures.
Signed on underside.
Painter, decorator, set designer and ceramist, Pietro Melandri was born in Faenza on 25 July 1885.
In 1919, together with Paolo Zoli and Francesco Nonni, he opened "La Faience", a workshop for the production of artistic ceramics, dedicating himself to technical and stylistic research for the renewal of traditional Faentine ceramics.
In 1920 he invited Arturo Martini to collaborate with him.
In 1921, the year in which he participated with some ceramics at the 1st Biennial of Rome, he met the industrialist Umberto Focaccia from Ravenna and the following year they founded the "Melandri-Focaccia" company.
In 1925 they exhibited at the Expo des Arts Decoratives in Paris and in 1930 at the Monza Triennale.
He collaborated with Giò Ponti on the interior decoration of some large transatlantic liners and some villas in Lombardy and revolutionised production by dedicating himself to works that were far from traditional, highly innovative and inspired by the widest possible experimentation.
In 1933 he took part in the Milan Triennale with some ceramics.
Awarded at the Triennale d'Arte in Milan in 1936, in 1937 he achieved great success at the Universal Exhibition in Paris where he was recognised as the most important Italian ceramist and was awarded the Grand Prize.
In the post-war period, Melandri created a rich and original production that, although it drew on the Faenza ceramic tradition, was charged with a strong and pregnant modernity that made him, in his own right, one of the great ceramic masters of the century.
Pietro Melandri, who remained active until the age of 86, died in Faenza in 1976.
