Contemporary White Enamel Ceramic Mirror by Frederic Bourdiec
By Frédéric Bourdiec
Located in Holmfirth, GB
Contemporary white enamel ceramic mirror by Frederic Bourdiec.
Size: 32 cm x 32 cm x 5 cm (depth)
Signature: Initialed ‘F B’ bottom left
Made in Marseille, France
About: Architect and ceramicist Frédéric Bourdiec believes that an object must be understood. His pieces speak of the geometry of the city, the aridity of the HBM (French low coast habitations) where he grew up or of the brutalist and functionalist architecture of the 50s/70s. He thinks that mathematically and structurally everything should be possible, so he tests the constraints of the material, the oven, the cooking and the deformations. He questions finesses, staves, assembly modes and textures. He finds a strong resonance in the work of the ceramics of architecture by Pierre and Vera Szekely...

Mado JOLAIN Anthropomorphic Stoneware Vase
By Mado Jolain
Located in Saint-Amans-des-Cots, FR
Stunning anthropomorphic ceramic vase by Mado JOLAIN, France, 1950s. Stoneware vase very close to Picasso's production, in terms of colors and design. Height : 9.1"(23.2cm), Diameter : 5"(12.6cm). Signed "m.j" under the base (see photos).
Mado Jolain was born in Paris in 1921. Under the Occupation, she joined the Paris School of Decorative Arts and the drawing and sculpture workshops of La Grande Chaumière. There she met René Legrand who turned more towards painting. Sensitized by the craze for ceramics which began before the war, Mado Jolain carried out her first attempts as a potter in the kiln of a utilitarian ceramics workshop, rue d'Alesia.
In 1946, Mado Jolain and René Legrand married and moved to Montrouge where René set up his painting studio. The ceramic workshop is not far away, in the 14th arrondissement. René Legrand shoots their first plays. Popular art, very popular in the decorative arts of the post-war period, was a great source of inspiration for them. They visit the Dijon Museum and the Museum of Popular Art and Traditions where they appreciate the shapes of utilitarian pottery.
In 1948, creations from the Mado Jolain workshop were exhibited for the first time at the Salon des Ateliers d'Art Décoratifs and at L'objet 1948, a landmark exhibition after the war, organized at the Galerie Denise Breteau, rue Bonaparte , Paris.
In 1950, the Mado Jolain ceramic workshop moved to Montrouge. René Legrand devoted himself more and more to painting, Klaus Schultze...

Robert Picault (1919 - 2000)

Robert Picault has contributed to the revival of culinary ceramics by updating traditional local forms decorated with lines and geometric designs.

In this village of a hundred potters, they met the neighboring ceramists André Baud, the 4 potters and among others the Madoura workshop, where he frequented the famous painter Picasso from 1949 to 1955. He also became friends with Jean Cocteau, Fernand Léger, Louis Aragon...
