Rare Masons Ironstone Chamber Candle Stick in Fence Japan Pattern, circa 1818

About the Item

This is a very rare Ironstone pottery Chamber Stick, made by the Mason's factory at Lane Delph, Staffordshire, England, circa 1818. The chamber stick is circular with a ring handle raised on a low foot. This piece is decorated in one of Mason's striking chinoiserie patterns, called the Fence Pattern. The pattern is hand-painted, over-glaze in bold enamels of cobalt blue, burnt orange and salmon all in varying shades, with hand gilded highlighting, over a blue transfer printed under-glaze outline. This pattern is illustrated on Page 89 of Mason's Pattern book published by The Mason's Collectors' Club The base has the circular impressed mark " Patent Ironstone China" which is recorded as being one of the earliest impressed factory marks indicating a date of circa 1813-1820, making this plate one of the earliest pieces of Mason's, as Ironstone was only produced by them from 1813, which is late George 111 period. This piece is in very good condition for its age. Overall a very rare early Mason's piece!
