Georgian Period Masons Ironstone Ink Well Hand Painted - Very Rare, circa 1817

About the Item

This is a very rare, ironstone Ink Well, all beautifully hand painted, made by Mason's, of Lane Delph, Staffordshire, England, circa 1815-1820. This piece is well potted as an open, vertically fluted dish and may have had an inner insert section originally. The upper rim is everted with a wavy edge. The piece is richly hand decorated on a deep mazarine blue ground, with a central bird set among flowers, which have all been richly hand-decorated, over-glaze in pastel shade enamels and with gold (gilt) detail to the rim as per the images. This is a very rare shape and pattern and is known as the: Gold Posies, enamelled Birds and Butterflies, as illustrated on a Wine Cooler on Page 215 of the book Mason's China and The Ironstone Wares, by Geoffrey Godden, published by The Antique Collectors Club. The piece is fully marked to the base with the circular impressed mark; "PATENT IRONSTONE CHINA", which is one of the earliest recorded Mason's marks dating the piece to 1813-1820.
