Raymond Loewy (1893-1986) is known for his streamlined Pennsylvania Railroad locomotives, Greyhound buses, the Lucky Strike package, and three Studebaker models. His name is so closely associated with the "American Way of Life" that he is often (wrongly) credited with the famous Coca-Cola glass bottle. What is less well known, however, is his work in the field of porcelain for some of the leading European manufacturers: Rosenthal in Selb (Germany), Bernardaud and Raynaud in Limoges. The exhibition "De terre et de feu", which was held this summer in Limoges, allowed us to (re)discover the essence of these creations. Born in France to a French family, Raymond Loewy emigrated to the United States in 1919, at the age of 26. He first worked as a fashion designer and then founded his design agency in 1930, after the British industrialist Sigmund Gestetner asked him to redesign a duplicator model. By the early 1960s, his agency had grown to 250 employees, and products bearing his name infiltrated virtually every area of American daily life. Considered by some to be one of the founders of Industrial Design (while others, especially in Europe, continue to see him as a mere commercial "stylist"), Loewy is often associated with the Streamline, the iconic aerodynamic style of the 1930s that wrapped all stationary and mobile products (from automobiles to refrigerators to radios) in a streamlined shell. For manufacturers, the name Loewy was synonymous with commercial success. He himself considered that the purpose of design was to sell, and wrote in a letter to the New York Times: "There is no line more beautiful than that of the progression of sales." In 1962, Pierre Bernardaud, took over the reins of the family business, also convinced that success depended on a renewal of forms. Ten years earlier, Raymond Loewy had founded the Compagnie de l'Esthétique Industrielle (CEI) in Paris, which had designed the LU cookie logo, the New Man logo and the La Croix bleach bottle. Requested by Bernardaud, the CEI designed the Ariès service in 1967, the first contemporary service in Limoges porcelain. It is characterized by a mixture of curved lines and sharp angles, illustrated by handles that are square on the outside and oval on the inside. Ariès was a great success. It was recently reissued for the Bernardaud Museum store in Limoges.
