Red Transfer ware Dishes

Two ‘Bisham Abbey’ Pattern dishes with rich, red printing on a chalcedony ground. Made by Davenport the dishes date from the early 19th century, circa 1810. The red transfer on the chalcedony ground is quite intense. The two dishes are a matching pair: they are different in shape, but identical in color, pattern, and style. We see a landscape scene showing two travelers resting in a forest outside Bisham Abbey. The combination of the two different shapes is unexpected and visually pleasing. Dimensions: Round Plate: 8 7/8 inches diameter Condition: Excellent Price: $330 Shaped dish with Davenport mark: 9 inches long x 6.5 inches at widest point Price: $350 Each of the plates can be purchased individually. Please let us know if you would like to purchase just one of the pair. Background Davenport Pottery was a leading English earthenware and porcelain manufacturer based in Longport, Staffordshire, England. In 1785, John Davenport began as a potter working with Thomas Wolfe of Stoke. In 1794, he acquired his own pottery at Longport and began producing cream-colored blue-printed earthenware. By September 1806 the quality of his porcelain and pottery wares was such that the Prince of Wales, later to become King George IV, ordered services from Davenport.
