About the Item

This is a rare vintage Hawkes hand blown, hand-cut service for 12 with extra pieces. The set contains 12 each of water, wine, champagne and cordial. These are big and heavy glasses, the water goblet is 7 3/4 inches high and weighs over a pound thus giving quite a substantial feeling when held. We don't know of any crystal glasses currently in production that are this heavy. The design features diamonds on top of the bowl with bands of oval forms, and a cut stem with a faceted merese or knob all resting on a square base. Hand-cutting allowed these glasses to be cut more deeply then modern machine-cut glasses, creating greater reflection of light and a more brilliant appearance. Glass blanks for this set were sourced from Steuben or Dorflinger, two exceptional manufacturers of clear glass, as was Hawkes' practice. Extra pieces include 1 water, 2 wine, 2 champagne and 8 finger bowls with under plates, a total of 61 pieces. Measures of Water: 7 3/4" high, 3 1/2" across rim, 2 7/8" square base, weighs over 16 ounces, Wine: 6 7/8" high, 2 7/8" across rim, 2 1/2" square base, weighs over 11 ounces, Champagne: 6 3/8" high, 3 3/4" across rim, 2 3/4" square base, weighs over 16 ounces, Cordial: 5 1/2" high, 1 5/8" across rim, 2 1/8" square base, weighs over 5 ounces, Finger bowls Underplates 6.5" diameter, Bowls 5" wide by 2.5" high, together weigh over 25 ounces. Extra pieces include 1 water, 2 wine, 2 champagne and 8 finger bowls with under plates, a total of 61 pieces. Signed "Hawkes" on the bottom of each piece. Made in Corning, New York by the T.G. Hawkes company, one of the most famous and successful America Brilliant Period glass cutters. Hawkes' glassware was used in the White House from 1885 until 1938. Condition:
Overall excellent condition, there are small bubbles which attest to each glass being hand blow, a few glasses have areas on the base where chips may have been ground out, this is hardly noticeable. No obvious grinding to the rim of the glasses.
