Extremely Rare Murano Glass Pumpkin by Carlo Scarpa for M.V.M. Cappellin, 1920s

About the Item

An exceptional and unique Murano glass pumpkin, designed by the young Carlo Scarpa during his early collaboration with M.V.M. Cappellin Glassworks, circa 1925–1931. This rare sculptural piece exemplifies the early mastery of one of the most celebrated figures in 20th-century Italian design. Entirely hand-blown without the use of a mould, this work features lattimo glass with iridescent opalescent surface treatment, showcasing brilliant hues of turquoise, copper, and amber that shimmer under the light. The richly shaped body, with its sensual lobed curves, is crowned by a delicately twisted stem and applied leaf in golden glass—now aged to a warm patina, bearing the unmistakable character of time. With a generous size of 16 cm (6.3 in) in diameter and 31 cm (12.2 in) in height, this piece commands presence while preserving the delicacy of Venetian glass artistry. This very model is a documented variation published in the book “The M.V.M. Cappellin Glassworks and the Young Carlo Scarpa, 1925–1931” (Skira), confirming its provenance and significance. Each pumpkin was conceived as a one-off, making this a true collector’s object from the formative years of Scarpa’s glass design journey.
