About the Item

Gorgeous example of Sommerso technique developed in the 1930's by Murano glass workers. This striking geometric piece goes from blue to an amber color to clear glass. The top has a hole with a silver plated rim where you can put cigarettes, cocktail picks or perhaps a candle. It is marked Murano P3 on the bottom. According to 20th century glass The Sommerso technique was originally developed in the 1930's by Antonio Da Ross. Sommerso (Italian for "submerged") is the Murano glassmaking technique of creating two or more layers of contrasting glass without the colours mixing together. It is formed by dipping coloured glass into molten glass of a different colour, before blowing the glass into the required form. The outermist layer is often clear. During the 1950's the Sommerso style became world famous due to the work of Flavio Poli, artistic director of Seguso Vetri d'Arte. There have since been many other factories in the Murano region which have made pieces in this style, and as such it is difficult to be certain of the manufacturer without labels or signatures present. Other well known manufacturers that have produced glassware in the Sommerso style include Mandruzzato, Galliano Ferro, Formia, Oball, Arte Nuova and Luigi Onesto.

Jean-Marie Giguère Abstract Fish Art Glass Sculpture Circa 1999
Located in Miami Beach, FL
Beautiful abstract fish art glass sculpture is by Canadian glass artist, Jean-Marie Giguère. He uses the Graal technique to create layers in the glass. The is piece is translucent with 2 engraved green fish with orange interior that reflects on the translucent section to make a muted orange color on the translucent area. Inside the orange section is a blue section (that I believe represents water) which also reflects on the bottom of the piece. Signed and dated 1999. From Espace Verre, Giguère’s has been working with the Graal technique. "This process combines glassblowing and engraving within layers of glass, revealing a smooth decorative pattern. He is inspired by everything, while appropriating each element. "I have searched for the common denominators to all humans, to use them as themes in my compositions: the body, territory, family, home, ancestors, religion, temples, God, nature, food, lovemaking, as well as symbols of identity," says Giguère.
